They’re cued or triggered by things in our environment — often stress. So what are your triggers for viewing porn, or masturbating? Science of Behavior Change: Willpower is in the Heart You can tell when someone is struggling with willpower by listening to the consistency of their heartbeat. When faced with a craving or internal threat (like a tempting porn thumbnail) the heart rate increases , but heart rate variability decreases . When people feel in control of the situation, their heart rate decreases, but variability does the opposite (it increases). The heart becomes more irregular in its beating. (This is the result of either the sympathetic nervous system (alert ) or the para sympathetic nervous system (calm) having more input on the heart rate.) “Heart rate is such a good index of willpower that you can use it to predict who will resist temptation, and who will give in.. . ” (The Willpower Instinct) If you remember back to Day Two, we gave you lists of things that both increased willpower, as well as things that decreased it. As it turns out, the way to improve your ability to fire up the ” pause – and – plan ” response — and interrupt the “fight – or – flight” response — is to practice these willpower builders.
